Luke 5:33-39 gives the account of the parable of the old wine-skins. Jesus said that it is futile to put new wine in old wine-skins or to put a piece of material from a new garment onto an old one. I learned good sewing skills from my Father who was the best bespoke tailor, in my view. His attention to detail whilst captivating and sometimes infuriating especially when he banned me from using his tailoring equipment, always resulted in the sharpest suits that made even the most ordinary deacon look debonair. I developed an expert eye for identifying good quality material. New material has completely different characteristics to old. The weave and pile of new a new fabric are soft and fresh but malleable. The old material being worn has already acquired the shape of its host and will pull in a different direction if joined to a new fabric. This is more apparent with old and new leather where the old is usually more supple, with identifiable widened pores. To join new and old leather together, therefore, would be like joining together a Volkswagen Beetle bonnet to a Porsche. A complete mismatch.
The old wine-skin or garment represents us as we begin each day and the potential for God to bless us with new ideas and innovations but we have to choose whether to stubbornly hold on to old habits and traditions which will hinder our faith and personal growth or to respond to God’s leading. New life is available to us on a daily basis and leads to innovations and change. Fear of change is only natural but too much fear is a sign of sinful resistance or clinging to a past place of safety. God said that He would declare onto man what is His thoughts Amos 4:13 (KJV) so today allow God to speak to you and produce in you Godly innovations.
